Washington County is the heart of Maine’s wild blueberry industry, producing nearly 100% of the nation’s wild blueberries. Unlike cultivated varieties, these berries grow naturally in the region’s acidic, glacier-sculpted soil, making them smaller, sweeter, and richer in antioxidants.

Each summer, the barrens turn a vibrant blue as growers harvest millions of pounds using traditional hand rakes and modern mechanical harvesters. Wild blueberries are a key part of the local economy and culture, celebrated at the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival every August. Visitors can enjoy fresh berries, blueberry-themed treats, and Maine’s famous Helen’s Restaurant blueberry pie.
